Job Description and Duties

Our Global Fixed Income program is currently seeking an Investment Director (ID) to oversee the investment management responsibility for internally managed portfolios and oversight of all externally managed high yield portfolios and drive our CalPERS mission.

Duties include but are not limited to:
• Develop a framework to assess macro and corporate sectors impacts on the high yield market, identify high yield investment risks and opportunities that can impact the CalPERS domestic investments portfolios and present findings and analysis to the Managing Investment Director (MID), the Credit Committee and/or the Internal Fixed Income Asset Allocation Committee.
• Responsible for the investment management portfolio results (internally and externally) of the CalPERS High Yield Segment investments.
• Lead the development and management of the CalPERS internal high yield portfolio management credit and trading staff to outperform the high yield benchmarks.
• Responsible for the oversight of all external high yield managers and make recommendations on changes to the allocation between internal/external managers or between external managers.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
• 15 years minimum experience as a generalist credit professional (portfolio manager or analyst) with a minimum of 5 years’ experience as a high yield bond portfolio manager within an investment, asset management or banking organization. Preference to candidates with performance track records, industry analysis experience of large sectors (i.e., energy.communications.etc). Experience analyzing stressed and distressed securities is desirable.
• MBA or possession of an advanced degree in finance or another technical field
• Professional certification such as CPA, CFA, JD
• Ability to research industry and issuers of corporate bond and money market securities
• PC experience with financial databases and software applications
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including making presentations
• Quantitatively oriented and comfortable analyzing and reporting on large amounts of data
• Ability to effectively manage multiple projects and priorities
