What is the position?
As a Veterinarian Specialist (General), you will work with university researchers and oversee studies of on-farm antibiotic use, animal husbandry, health outcomes, and/or resistant pathogens. You will serve as a key member of the surveys and studies unit within the Antimicrobial Use and Stewardship (AUS) branch and act as a lead in one or more programs or functions. Due to the high-profile nature of AUS, you must establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, industry partners, researchers, and the public; accurately analyze situations; take effective actions based on sound analysis; make appropriate decisions and recommendations; work independently to complete assignments; work well under pressure; meet required deadlines; and have excellent verbal and writing skills.
What will you do?
• Plan, organize, coordinate, and direct activities related to the State’s antimicrobial use and resistance monitoring program, evaluate research outcomes and study efforts, and advise the branch’s Research Scientist Supervisor on progress and the results of various studies.
• Work with California Animal Health and Food Safety (CAHFS) Laboratory, industry stakeholders, and other federal and State agencies to develop studies focused on monitoring on-farm antimicrobial drug use and resistance in livestock animals.
• Coordinate with branch staff with the preparation of reports, newsletters, presentations, agency correspondence, and management updates.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, industry partners, specialists, and university researchers.
• Coordinate activities related to antimicrobial drug use and best management practices of select industry participants representing all sectors of livestock production and all geographic areas.
• Research scientific literature related to antimicrobial use, resistance, and identify knowledge gaps and/or opportunities for further programmatic study; review professional journals to expand and maintain knowledge and expertise; and serve as a State resource for programmatic issues.
• Review, apply, and enforce laws, regulations, and policies of the Department and of various local, State and Federal government agencies in all aspects of assigned duties.
