Job Description and Duties

The Regional Air Quality Modeling (RAQM) Section at CARB is seeking a highly motivated candidate to fill the position of Air Pollution Specialist. The successful candidate will join a dynamic team to provide air quality modeling support for the development of State Implementation Plans, as well as other regulatory and scientific activities at CARB. The primary responsibilities of this position include: 1) conduct global chemical transport model simulations to provide boundary conditions for regional air quality modeling and investigate the impact of global sources on California's air quality; 2) evaluate and improve air quality model performance through comparison of the model output to data collected from the routine monitoring network, field studies and satellite data products; 3) Implement updated chemical mechanisms in regional air quality model and design inter-comparison of modeling studies for evaluating new chemical mechanisms. 4) Develop methods for evaluating the ability of a photochemical model to simulate the observed change in pollutant concentrations over time, including recommendations on how to update/improve the emissions inventory, chemical mechanism, and meteorology used in the simulations.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
Expereince in a master or doctorate level experience in the atmospheric sciences, environmental science/engineering or a related field, demonstrable experience in applying regional and/or global scale chemical transport and meteorological models to study the formation and transport mechanisms for ozone and PM2.5, as well as experience using satellite data products in model evaluation and data assimilation. Experience in modifying and/or implementing chemical mechanisms in chemical transport models is also highly desirable. Strong programming skills are critical for this position.
