Job Description and Duties

Under the general direction of the Director of the Office of Planning and Research (OPR), the Special Assistant will serve as lead support for the Director, performing a variety of analytical and administrative support duties; consistently exercise a high level of initiative, independence, and originality in performing assigned tasks including research of facts on which decisions or recommendations may be based.  The assignments are routinely sensitive and typically specialized.

Working Conditions

Work will be done in a climate-controlled office under artificial lighting.  Telework is available during the COVID-19 pandemic.

    Department Information

    The Governor’s Office of Planning and Research (OPR) serves the Governor and his Cabinet as staff for long-range planning and research and constitutes the comprehensive state planning agency. OPR operates a variety of programs and initiatives, hosts tools and clearinghouses, and leads a range of activities related to land use and community planning/development, climate adaptation and resilience, sustainable economic development, military affairs and coordination, and other activities that support long-range planning and research across the state.     OPR is a fast-paced, creative work environment. Assignments may involve high-visibility and politically sensitive subjects that are of critical importance to the Governor of California and to the State. As such, this position requires a high degree of independent judgement, strong collaboration and communication skills, a positive attitude, and a sense of humor.

    This position is designated under the Conflict of Interest Code. The position is responsible for making, or participating in the making, of governmental decisions that may potentially have a material effect on personal financial interests. The appointee is required to complete form 700 within 30 days of appointment and annually thereafter. Failure to comply with the Conflict of Interest Code requirements may void the appointment.

    Special Requirements

    Minimum Qualifications:  A Bachelor's Degree or an Associates and 2 years work experience.
