Job Description and Duties

This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by Infectious Diseases Branch.

 

Under direction by the Northern Region Supervising Public Health Biologist, Vector-Borne Disease Section, the incumbent will independently conduct vector-borne disease prevention, surveillance, and control activities in a designated region and elsewhere in California as required.

 

The position is a full journey level Associate Public Health Biologist. The incumbent will conduct the more difficult and highly specialized epidemiological investigations and disease surveillance in the assigned area; plan, organize, and carry out applied research and other projects on vector-borne diseases; maintain contact with managers and scientific staff of vector control agencies, Health Officers, and Directors of environmental health programs; and provide training, technical assistance, consultation, and related activities for vector-borne disease prevention.

 

This position requires medical clearance upon job offer & acceptance.

***Will also consider Temporary Authorization Utilization (TAU) appointments- Candidates that meet the minimum qualifications for the classification but do not currently have eligibility on an employment certification list by having taken and passed an examination may apply as a TAU. TAU appointments are limited to a duration of 9 months within a 12 consecutive month period. In order for a TAU appointment to become permanent, individuals must take and pass the related examination, and thereby become eligible from a certification list, within 9 months of TAU appointment. Individuals who successfully obtain eligibility prior to the expiration of the TAU appointment will not be required to re-compete in a competitive process for permanent appointment to that position.***

Department Information

The Infectious Diseases Branch (IDB) conducts investigation, surveillance, prevention, and control of general communicable diseases of public health importance that are not covered by the specific programs of the Immunization Branch, the Tuberculosis Control Branch, the Sexually Transmitted Diseases Control Branch, and the Office of HIV/AIDS.  IDB implements its program through its four Sections: Disease Investigations Section, Surveillance and Statistics Section, Vector-Borne Disease Section, and Veterinary Public Health Section.  Diseases followed by IDB include foodborne, waterborne, vector-borne, zoonotic, and emerging infectious diseases.
