Job Description and Duties

The California Energy Commission seeks an Electrical Engineer in the Energy Research and Development Division/Energy Systems Research Office/Natural Gas Safety Unit.

 

Under the direction of the Energy Resources Specialist III (Supervisory), the incumbent supports interdisciplinary teams focused on the development and deployment of technologies for the CEC’s Energy Research & Development Division’s (ERDD) research programs by performing the less complex field and office electrical and electronic engineering work. The incumbent works under the guidance of the Senior Electrical Engineer Technical Lead and is part of an integrated technical team that is evaluating and managing new and emerging technologies that will help California meet the future carbon neutral energy system goals while maintaining reliability while also remaining resilient to climate variations and threats such as wildfires, earthquakes, floods, and other challenges to the energy infrastructure. The incumbent manages research projects that may include advanced energy storage technologies, vehicle/grid integration, clean energy microgrids, and other evolving technologies that may support grid reliability given increased renewable penetration and ensure energy services to critical facilities. The incumbent may also manage projects that address the future needs of the electric grid. The incumbent may also manage research efforts in the decarbonization of the California gas pipeline system and oversee efforts to evaluate and develop solutions that will result in a carbon neutral system by 2045. The incumbent helps the CEC complete time critical research that will help ensure the future energy systems are clean, reliable, equitable and safe. The incumbent may also conduct analysis on the data collected through these research grants to inform future research grant investments.

Working Conditions

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the majority of the duties will be performed in a telework environment but may return to an office environment in the future. Regular and consistent attendance is essential to the successful performance in this position. Occasional travel may be required to conduct project site visits. While performing the duties described above, the incumbent will be required to work alone and/or in a team environment; utilize a personal computer and appropriate Energy Commission software such as Microsoft suite of software, electronic mail, Internet and analytical models. The incumbent will be required to plan, organize, assist and/or participate in meetings with other Energy Commission staff, staff from other federal and state agencies, consultants, contractors, and other parties active in energy-related research and development.

Salary Reduction Notice

Salaries do not reflect the reduction of pay. Effective July 1, 2020, in response to the economic crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the California Department of Human Resources (CalHR) implemented the Personal Leave Program 2020 (PLP 2020). For Fiscal Years 2020-21 through 2021-22, employees will participate in the PLP 2020 and be credited (16) hours per month of PLP hours in return for reduction of pay equal to 9.23%. Part time employees shall be subject to the same conditions as stated above, on a pro-rated basis.
