Job Description and Duties

The incumbent will work closely with engineering staff in evaluating the safety of jurisdictional dams throughout California. Activities include reviewing complex geologic and seismologic reports, exploration proposals and results. Reviewing plans for dams, reservoirs, and appurtenant structures under State review. Formulate geologic findings, conclusions, and make recommendations for Division approval of projects. Perform inspections of geologic and seismologic condition at dam and reservoir sites and inspect relevant geologic features before and during construction. Communicate project geologic and seismologic conditions, findings, conclusions, and recommendations to Division management, engineering staff, consultants, and dam owners. Develop information, conduct research, and monitor changes to regional aspects of the geologic environment that are significant to the long-term structural integrity of dams and reservoirs.  May act for the Geology Branch Manager during periods of absence as necessary.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:


A current California Certified Engineering Geologist license. A strong background in soil and rock exploration methods, site characterization for engineering analyses, seismic hazard assessment, and dam foundation engineering geology is highly desirable. Strong written and verbal communication skills are also necessary. As is the ability to perform independent technical work and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the work. Must be able to inspect dams including walking dam faces and climbing abutments and other similar physical activity; must be able to inspect subsurface exploration excavations. Must be able to travel by airplane, vehicle or other form of transportation to different areas or field locations in California with some overnight stay or overnight travel, as required.
