Job Description and Duties

The Department of Financial Protection and Innovation is recruiting for one permanent, full-time Information Technology Specialist I position in the Information Technology Office. Position to be located in the Sacramento office. This recruitment may be used to fill subsequent vacancies of these positions within the next 180 days.

Under the general direction of the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), the Information Security Specialist (ISS) ensures Department of Financial Protection and Innovation (DFPI) Information Technology (IT) systems are protected from threats through use of security awareness training, compliance assessments, and automated technical tools which detect cybersecurity threats, prohibit access to inappropriate content, and centrally log critical security events for evaluation and response. The ISS is responsible for logging of privacy and security incidents which involve potential loss, theft, and misuse of IT assets or confidential data. The ISS is responsible for ensuring ongoing compliance with state and federal regulations including California Civil Code, the State Administrative Manual (SAM), the Statewide Information Management Manual (SIMM), and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) applicable security requirements. The ISS assists ongoing risk assessments and security assessments of internal IT systems, and related systems for Business, Consumer Services and Housing Agency as well as DFPI.  The ISS promotes DFPI’s technology recovery program for DFPI managed IT systems, contractor managed IT systems, and related services.

Department Information

The Department of Financial Protection and Innovation (DFPI) (formerly Department of Business Oversight) protects consumers and oversees financial service providers and products. The DFPI supervises the operations of state-licensed financial institutions, including banks, credit unions and money transmitters. Additionally, the DFPI licenses and regulates a variety of financial service providers, including securities brokers and dealers, investment advisers, payday lenders and other consumer finance lenders. CONFLICT OF INTEREST

The incumbent is required to submit a Statement of Economics Interests (Form 700) within 30 days of assuming office, annually by April 1st and within 30 days of leaving office.

  • Experience and knowledge of procedures for incident handling, particularly for analyzing incident-related data and determining the appropriate response.
  • Ability to assist with assessment, development, implementation, and maintenance of a security and privacy training and awareness program, ensuring consistency with the organizations risk management strategy and priorities.
  • Ability to categorize the information system and the information processed, stored, and transmitted by that system.
