Job Description and Duties

Join the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Data Analytics Unit (DAU) and help make the DOJ a great place to work and thrive professionally. The DAU is looking for a highly motivated and technically knowledgeable Research Data Specialist I (RDS I) to provide expertise in the areas of applied research, data analytics, statistical research methods, workforce intelligence, and other human resource areas.

As a RDS I, you will be responsible for conducting research studies and statistical analyses to support DOJ's data analytics and workforce planning initiatives. You will have the opportunity to conduct research and identify relevant data sources that contain human resources, compensation, workforce projections, recruiting and census information. You will apply these data to the development of research plans, project objectives, data collection methods, and analyses regarding workforce trends. In addition, you will present data findings and recommendations using data visualization techniques to departmental leadership and program subject matter experts in order to effectively convey critical workforce-related data.

This position provides the opportunity to serve as a technical resource for staff and provide regular training to interested individuals throughout the Office of Human Resources (OHR) on applied research, data analysis and data visualization. You will also represent the DAU on cross-functional teams and provide expertise and knowledge on statistical research and data analytics.

  • Demonstrated experience in designing and conducting applied research studies including the collection, compilation, analysis, interpretation and presentation of workforce or other quantitative and qualitative data.
  • Expertise in data visualization techniques used to present large amounts of complex data to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience with the development and use of relational databases including an in-depth knowledge of SQL. Advanced level knowledge of both inferential and descriptive statistical analysis including linear modeling, bi-variate and multi-variate statistics.
  • Experience with SPSS, SAS, R, the Excel data analysis toolpak or other statistical analysis software.
  • Knowledge of software coding in Python, PSP, Visual Basic or another programming or coding language.
  • Willingness to learn new skills and attempt projects that may be outside of your comfort zone.
  • Expert level knowledge in the use of Excel, Access, and Word.
  • Knowledge of the State of California’s human resource data systems is highly desirable but not required.
