Job Description and Duties

At the California Department of Justice - Office of the Attorney General, you will be a part of a diverse group of over 5,000 professionals whose primary mission is to deliver fairness and equality under the law, through a broad spectrum of programs and services.

Deputies in the Business Litigation Section (formerly Business & Tax Section) defend a variety of state agencies in all phases of civil litigation in state and federal trial courts, including federal bankruptcy court, and on appeal.  Matters are often complex challenges to government decisions presenting questions of first impression about constitutional and statutory interpretation. Primary clients include state taxing agencies (including the Franchise Tax Board, California Department of Tax and Fee Administration, State Board of Equalization, and Employment Development Department), the California Department of Insurance, Department of Real Estate, and Department of Financial Protection and Innovation. Clients also include the State Controller, State Treasurer, the Department of General Services, and other state agencies and officials. Subject matter expertise in tax, insurance, real estate, and the like is not required.  Some overnight travel may be required. Candidates should have substantial litigation and appellate experience; excellent research, writing and editing skills, as well as oral advocacy skills; strong communication, collaboration and diplomatic skills; and an interest in learning new areas of law.
