Job Description and Duties

Perform field-based fisheries assessments to monitor the status of fish and amphibian populations including electrofishing, snorkeling, angling, gill netting, and creel census; conduct habitat assessments to document streamflow, water quality, habitat type, substrate, stream length, canopy cover, fish cover types, temperature, gradient, etc; perform field-based restoration activities; collect and record field data following established protocols; manage and maintain specialized field equipment.

Working Conditions

Office will be located in Los Alamitos. Ability to conduct biological resource work in the field; travel throughout the state; and work at odd or irregular hours. Ability to use a personal computer and keyboard at least several hours a day, sitting most of the time, which may involve walking or standing for brief periods to access files, references, and other program materials. Attend meetings and internal and external training. In addition to working with regional staff, interact with headquarters staff and members of the public via e-mail, telephone and through virtual meetings. Possession of valid CA driver’s license. Ability to drive for up to 8 hours. Ability to work outdoors for up to week-long trips in variable weather conditions, operate 4WD vehicles, wade in streams, and walk over uneven outdoor terrain carrying a 40 lb. backpack for up to 6 hours. Backpacking and remote camping may be required on occasion. Occasional overnight travel to reach some project locations may be required.

Special Requirements

• Either I: Education - Two years of college with 10 semester units in biology or other natural resource related studies OR II: one year experience in surveying, studying, or evaluating fish or wildlife populations;
• Ability to read and speak English at a level required for successful job performance;
• Ability to swim 50 yards and stay afloat at least five minutes;
• Willingness to work irregular hours including nights, weekends and holidays;
• Possession of a valid California driver’s license, with a clean driving record
• Lift 40 lbs.
