Job Description and Duties

The Tort and Condemnation Section provides legal representation to California State agencies, government officials, law enforcement officers, and employees. Our highly skilled deputies pride themselves on providing aggressive, proactive, and progressive litigation strategies and are committed to cultivating long-term client relationships. Torts and Condemnation is looking for a Senior Legal Analyst to join our Oakland team.


The analyst will work under the general supervision of the section’s Supervising Deputy Attorneys General. The analyst will independently perform a wide variety of the most complex and sensitive paralegal duties. Paralegals assist Deputy Attorneys General in litigating and trying complex cases. Paralegals review and analyze client agency requests for legal services, draft and respond to discovery, perform legal research, design and conduct investigations, interview and prepare witnesses, gather documentation, draft declarations, analyze evidence such as medical records, summarize and categorize deposition transcripts, create manual and computerized systems for managing discovery documents, analyze and summarize trial evidence, prepare expert contracts and manage billings, assists attorney in preparing expert witnesses for depositions and trial testimony, analyze and summarize expert witness statements, organize and prepare cases for trial, attend trials as needed and otherwise assist attorneys in litigation. The paralegal should possess the necessary skills to assist Deputy Attorneys General fully with maintaining, managing, and creating systems for gathering and tracking litigation information; including the use of document management technology related to civil litigation, including substantial e-discovery issues. The paralegal may also assist the Supervising Deputy Attorneys General in various administrative tracking and reporting functions.

Desirable Qualifications

Knowledge of the Government Claims Act. Demonstrated experience in legal support, including litigation defense. Ability to work independently, often under time constraints, and provide high-level assistance to attorneys. Ability to establish rapport with section attorneys, paralegals, client agencies, and the public. Experience in complex litigation is desirable. Computer literacy is necessary with experience in document management and working with voluminous records and electronic data. 
Applicants with strong writing, research and organizational skills are preferred.
