Job Description and Duties

Under the general direction of the Maintenance and Operations Supervisor I, the Supervising Groundskeeper I, supervises and leads subordinate staff (both civil servant and 119-Day Temporary staff). The Supervising Groundskeeper is responsible for performing a variety of landscape and maintenance duties throughout the 22nd District Agricultural Association (22nd DAA), including, but not limited to the 22nd DAA properties, parking lots, and adjacent streets; operating and maintaining a variety of equipment and tools; and performing other related responsibilities.

Working Conditions

Work requires heavy physical and manual labor in safely handling, lifting, or carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds, and climbing a ladder or operating a lift to reach high spaces.  Works involves reaching, stretching, bending, stooping, kneeling, and moving about to perform duties. May encounter live or dead insects, reptiles, rodents or other wildlife in the performance of duties. May require ability to work overtime.  Requires ability to inspect the grounds and the proper operation of machinery/equipment. Requires use of power and noise-producing tools or equipment and driving motorized equipment or vehicles applicable to job being performed. Wear safety equipment during work performance i.e. ear plugs, dust masks, eye goggles, face shield, latex gloves, cloth gloves, rubber boots or rain gear, aprons and back support.  Work involves exposure to unusual elements, such as confined spaces, uneven ground surfaces, extreme temperatures, dust, fumes, unpleasant odors, and loud noises, and may involve exposure to hazardous chemicals or physical risks which requires following basic safety precautions.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
  • Two-years performing the duties of a Supervising Groundskeeper or three-years as a Lead Groundskeeper.
  • Four years of experience in planting and cultivating flowers, trees, lawns, and shrubs and in general ground maintenance work.
  • At least one year of experience in the care and maintenance of public parks, large private estates, institutions, in commercial nurseries landscape work, in highway landscaping work, or at a Fairgrounds.
  • Completion of a two-year nondegree course in landscape design or landscape gardening.
  • Knowledge and skill of the use of modern methods of propagating, planting, cultivating, and caring for trees, shrubs, flowers, and lawns.
  • Knowledge and skill of plant pests and diseases and the methods for their control and eradication.
  • Knowledge and skill of methods, materials, equipment, and tools used in gardening work.
  • Ability to read and write and effectively communication, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to direct the layout and repair of roads and walks; maintain sprinkling and drainage systems; read and interpret landscaping plans and specifications; and prepare budget estimates and reports.
