Job Description and Duties

Our Global Equity program is currently seeking a Investment Officer IO II / III to lead and direct the corporate governance program's day-to-day operations of proxy voting, corporate engagement initiatives, and help implement and drive our CalPERS mission.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead and direct the corporate governance program's day-to-day operations of proxy voting, corporate engagement, and shareowner campaigns in assigned sectors, industries and/or geographies in compliance with the CalPERS Governance and Sustainability Principles 
  • Lead and execute on CalPERS' strategic and core ESG initiatives as directed by the Investment Director, including the drafting of reports, letters and presentations, and the conducting of research 
  • Develop, lead, and implement shareholder initiatives, including coordination of research and engagement with external partners such as institutional shareholders, proxy advisory firms and the broader ESG investment community 
Telework Information: This position is eligible for an office-centered hybrid telework schedule with up to two days of telework and three days or more onsite, per week.

This position is eligible for an annual incentive award and Charter Financial Analyst (CFA) pay differential. The annual incentive opportunity is 0-10% of salary for an Investment Officer II and 0-20% of salary for an Investment Officer III. This award is based on the level of achievement against several quantitative and qualitative measures. Permanent full-time employees who possess certification as a CFA may receive a 5% monthly base pay differential.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
  • Undergraduate degree in finance, economics, or another applicable technical field; CFA, CPA, CAIA, or other industry certification is a plus 
  • Investment background, experience, and acumen, with direct responsibility for one or more functions in the investment management chain (research, portfolio construction, portfolio management, or other), with an emphasis on equity markets 
  • A working knowledge of corporate governance, specifically relating to proxy voting and corporate engagement 
  • Ability to demonstrate, with in-depth, evidence-based research, how ESG factors can influence investment risks and returns of an equity portfolio 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, as well as polished presentation skills 
  • Strong work ethic, high integrity, and desire to learn
