Job Description and Duties

In accordance with Governor Newsom’s Executive Order N-33-20 and, as a result of the COVID-19 rapid out-break, Caltrans will continue its hiring practices as they are deemed necessary to “maintain continuity of operations of the federal critical infrastructure…,” Candidates who participate in the interview process will be considered essential in promoting this effort and are not in violation of Executive Order N-33-20. Virtual interviews via web portals or phone will be offered as deemed appropriate and feasible by the hiring manager – standard in-person interviews will still be offered if conditions permit. WILL CONSIDER TRANSPORTATION PLANNER

Under the direction of the Chief, "Integration and Network Planning" Branch in the Division of Rail & Mass Transportation (DRMT), the Associate Transportation Planner undertakes complex statewide planning responsibilities at full journey person level. Responsibilities include development of the California State Rail Plan as well as participating in network integration activities and coordinating with partner agencies, other Caltrans Divisions, the California High Speed Rail Authority, and CalSTA. Responsible for reviewing rail and transit related transportation studies, including freight. May serve as the point of contact and provide input for multi-modal freight activities. Additional responsibilities may include various quantitative and qualitative technical analyses using GIS and or other software packages.

Working Conditions

This position is located in Sacramento-HQ

This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s current telework policy. While Caltrans supports telework, in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksite with minimal notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate may be required to conduct business travel on behalf of the Department or commute to the headquartered location. Business travel reimbursements considers an employee’s designated Headquarters Location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions.  All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.


New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.
