Job Description and Duties

The Diagnostic Center North Physician serves as a member of the Assessment team to provide transdisciplinary assessments and/or trainings to local educational agencies (LEA), including delivery of information regarding diagnoses and instructional planning for students with any disabilities.

The Physician provides transdisciplinary assessment and consultation services to the Assessment Team including conducting a medical examination when appropriate, interviewing the parent and/or student, and contacting appropriate medical personnel for additional information. the Physician also participates in observing student behaviors when appropriate. 

The Physician writes comprehensive report(s) in collaboration with team and meet report completion deadlines.  This report includes assessment findings, educationally relevant medical information and related recommendations. The report is written in a manner such that complex medical problems are explained in terms understandable to educators and families.

The Physician presents results of medical and neurological findings and related recommendations at conferences with parents, LEA personnel and other staff including mental health and social service professionals.

Working Conditions

Will work in a temperature-controlled environment with LED lighting, predominantly sit (or sit/stand) at desk during normal working hours to perform daily duties, and may be required to lift and carry up to 25lbs.

May be required to bend, squat, kneel, stoop, or sit on ground when working with and assessing students. May be required to drive state fleet vehicles with coworkers when going to/from school districts or assessment sites. Overnight stay may be required.

Department Information

The Diagnostic Center, Northern California (DCN) services are provided by expert, transdisciplinary teams of diagnostic professionals, including educational specialists, speech/language specialists, school psychologists, clinical psychologists, and a pediatrician who address the unique educational needs of Northern California's students with complex learning and behavioral challenges enrolled in special education programs.

The DCN operates from a “whole child” perspective focusing on the needs of the students we serve. The DCN is one of three regional assessment centers operated by the State Special Schools and Services Division of the California Department of Education. The Centers provide assessment, training, and technical assistance to all Local Educational Agencies (LEAs) in California. The DCN offers highly specialized services in the following areas:

  • Comprehensive, state-of-the-art assessment and educational planning services to assist local school districts in determining the needs of their most complex students;
  • On-site technical assistance and consultation in program and instructional design based on the unique needs of each student;
  • Professional development opportunities for teachers, administrators and special education staff, including presentations at national, statewide, and local conferences and workshops, provided by specialists with "hands-on" experience;
  • Family education opportunities, including consultation, referral, and resource information.
There is no cost for our services; however, requests for assessment services must be generated by the local school district.

Special Requirements

California Medical License is required for this position 

This position requires the following pre-employment clearance:

  • Tuberculosis (TB) Risk Assessment and or Test
  • Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) and Department of Justice (DOJ) Fingerprint Clearance.
