Job Description and Duties

The Department of Toxic Substances Control is  looking for a Staff Toxicologist (Specialist) who is passionate about protecting our communities from the effects of exposure to chemical contamination in the environment. An individual who is not only knowledgeable, but a great communicator, dedicated to public service, and who cares for others! The Staff Toxicologist (Specialist) independently provides expert scientific support in the areas of toxicology, human and/or ecological risk assessment and exposure assessment, along with a variety of more difficult tasks directly related to toxicology and risk assessment. This position is designated to support the needs of Site Mitigation and Restoration Program (SMRP) Site Discovery and Enforcement Program (D&E). If this role sounds like you, then join us today!

 

As a Staff Toxicologist (Specialist) you will have the opportunity to:

  • Prepare and review complex Health Risk Assessments (HRA) and/or Ecological Risk Assessments (ERA)

 

  • Independently review and evaluate existing toxicological information such as acute and chronic toxicity

 

  • Participate in intra- and extra-Department investigation

 

Desirable Qualifications We Look For:

  • Advanced knowledge in one or more sub specialties for Toxicology or risk assessment

 

  • Experience reviewing or performing human health risk assessment for contaminated properties, following USEPA and/or California guidelines

 

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

 

  • Experience in public speaking and use plain language to explain complex scientific concepts, and excellent risk communication skills

 

  • Experience working/interacting with communities, mentor others, and be involved with professional societies in relevant areas

Working Conditions

A telework flexibility schedule may be available for this position.  The position can be located in one of our regional offices at Cal-Center in Sacramento, CA or in Berkeley, CA.

Statement of Qualification (SOQ) Instructions

 

A Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) is required for the hiring manager’s review. Applications submitted without an SOQ may be disqualified.

 

The SOQ should be no more than 2 page(s) in length, be clearly written and well-organized, free of spelling and grammatical errors, and Arial font size 12.

 

Your SOQ should address the following:

  1. Describe your knowledge and experience in human health risk assessment, toxicology, exposure assessment modeling, and/or high throughput toxicological assays and their interpretation.

 

  1. Describe your experience in public speaking distinguishing between when the audience were other scientists or when you had to present complex scientific concepts to non-scientists; include any experience developing training modules, participating in mentoring programs, and/or working with community groups.
