Job Description and Duties

Under the direction of the Deputy Director, Cooperative Fire Protection, the Assistant Deputy Director Training, Safety, and Emergency Medical Services is responsible for the direction, coordination, and support of CAL FIRE’s Training, Safety and Emergency Medical Services Programs that are critical to achieving the Fire Protection Program goals and objectives. The Assistant Deputy Director is responsible for the following statewide programs: Statewide Training, CAL FIRE Training Centers, Safety, and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Programs.

 

The Assistant Deputy Director is responsible for the oversight of CAL FIRE’s Statewide Training Program and the CAL FIRE Training Centers. CAL FIRE’s Statewide Training Program encompasses the practical experience learned while at the Training Centers in addition to those continuing education segments completed within an employee’s home Unit. The Training Centers provide multi-disciplined “All-Risk” training through a combination of educational theory, drills, and practical application. The incumbent directs the development of training to assist field staff in accomplishing fire protection, resource management, and administrative objectives.

 

The Assistant Deputy Director is also responsible for CAL FIRE’s Safety and EMS Programs. These programs are designed to protect the lives and physical well-being of CAL FIRE employees; protect the lives, physical well-being, and property of the public; identify potential work hazards and initiate reasonable actions to eliminate or mitigate those hazards; investigate work-related accidents and injuries; ensure compliance with applicable safety-related laws and regulations and ensure compliance with EMS laws and regulations. The Assistant Deputy Director provides direction, recommends, develops, and implements improved accident prevention methods and EMS program needs through policies, procedures, and or by augmenting current training procedures within the Units and at the Training Centers, provides direction and approves research and development projects both internal and external to the Department.

This position may qualify for a recruitment and retention bonus of $1550 per month.

    Desirable Qualifications

    *Demonstrated experience using examples which has included broad administrative or program managerial capabilities, with substantial participation in the development, establishment, implementation, and evaluation of program policies and procedures, budgets, and other fiscal matters.

    *Demonstrated experience in analyzing complex issues and recommending effective courses of action including preparing and/or reviewing reports that impact the state or region.

     

    *Demonstrated experience as a broad administrative or program manager with substantial participation in the development, implementation, and/or administration of Safety and Emergency Medical Service programs.

     

    *Demonstrated knowledge of Departments Training program with substantial participation in the development, implementation and/or administration of training programs and effective methods to advise the Deputy Director, Cooperative Fire Protection, regarding program issues.  

     

    *Demonstrated leadership skills to build and foster a positive team environment and the ability to value differing opinions, viewpoints, perspectives, needs, and interests.

    Examination Information
