Under direction of the Information Officer II, the Public Information Officer (Earthquake Early Warning) performs complex public outreach, media relations and public information tasks and duties, coordinates outreach and education campaigns, and acts in a lead capacity over other information officers during emergency operations.

The Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) is recruiting for a Public Information Officer to serve as the lead spokesperson for the Earthquake Early Warning Program. This communicator will have public education expertise, a passion for team and staff development, commitment to equity and the organizational skills to help the team. This role will work closely within a larger growing team of 22 media professionals.

The ideal candidate works well under pressure and understands education and outreach efforts. This position will help with media relations, communications, owned media and public 
information functions, while working closely with the Senior Public Information Officer to ensure that the department’s communication strategy and tactics consistently delivers messages that motivate people to prepare for, respond to and recover from disasters, like earthquakes.

In the event of an emergency, employees may be contacted and requested to report to work in the event of an emergency. This contact may be outside of your normal working hours (evenings/nights, weekends, and holidays). This service may require irregular work hours, work locations other than the official duty location, and may include duties other than those specified in your official position description. Travel requirements in support of emergency operations may be extensive in nature (weeks to months), with little advance notice, and you may be required to relocate to emergency sites.
