Job Description and Duties

Interested in joining a dedicated & diverse team within the Wildlife Health Laboratory (WHL)? The Department of Fish and Wildlife is seeking a highly dedicated, strongly self-motivated individual to serve as our Senior Laboratory Assistant. We're seeking core laboratory support as we continue to grow. Learn more about this unique opportunity!

Under general direction of the WHL Supervisor, and guidance of our Veterinarians and senior staff, the position will help maintain core lab function and serve as a Lead Person. Duties will include: Maintaining standard operating procedures (SOP), safety guidelines, and lab protocols; assist processing biological samples (necropsies, live animals); and hazardous waste disposal. Monitoring staff compliance of WHL drug program safety protocol; and implementation of radiation safety program. Providing data management support (i.e., data entry, analysis, various datasets); and maintaining WHL databases (E.g., Laboratory Information Management Software (XLIMS), necropsy & disease surveillance data). Managing supply inventory; procurement; maintaining lab inventory and coordinating equipment maintenance/repair (e.g., freezers, autoclaves, radiation machine); organization of lab facilities (e.g., animal pens, necropsy room).

This position is a 12 months Limited Term (LT), which may be extended upto 24 months or becaome permanent.

If you currently have permanent staus in your position and have passed probation, you have mandatory reinstatement rights into your former position at the end of this LT appointment. If you have not had prior permanent or probationary civil service status, you will be separated from State service.

Working Conditions

Ability to use a computer keyboard in a sitting and/or standing position several hours a day. Will interact with regional and branch staff, and members of the public via e-mail, telephone, and in-person in congruence with COVID-19 prevention practices. Must attend occasional meetings. Ability to drive up to 8-hours. Must be vaccinated against rabies virus with adequate current antibody titer or willing to receive pre-exposure rabies vaccinations. Must feel comfortable with potential close contact with imperiled and/or confined wild animals. Background check required. This is a full-time limited term position for 2 years. The position may become permanent.
