Job Description and Duties


Under the general supervision of the District Maintenance Engineer, a Senior Transportation Engineer, the successful candidate will lead the delivery of Minor B (contracts of $388,000 or less) Capital projects and may provide design support on Major Damage Restoration Emergency Opening (E.O. aka "Emergency Projects") projects. Development and delivery of Minor B contracts includes independently producing Plans, Specifications, and Estimates (PS&Es) for small roadway infrastructure, traffic safety/operations, occasionally facility improvements/repairs, and related projects. This includes applying for and acquiring all necessary supporting documentation from Right of Way, Surveys, Geotech, Traffic Management, Environmental, and any other applicable support units in order to advance projects from initiation to delivery and providing design support through construction. Projects will often address Senate Bill 1 (SB1) assets including but not limited to: pavement restoration; bridge; guardrail end treatments and other traffic devices - signs, signals, lighting, and TMS Elements; culverts and other drainage facilities. The support of E.O. projects may consist of working in the field to determine scope or alternatives of repair/restoration, providing support and guidance to Maintenance field forces or other Project Engineers from the squad, and assist Construction in the administration of Emergency Projects. The ideal candidate will have a well-rounded background in several subject areas of Civil Engineering, good working knowledge of MicroStation, Civil3D, and other CAD related software.

While at their base of operation, employees will work in a climate-controlled office under artificial lighting. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. While performing the duties of this job the employee may regularly work outside to conduct field reviews, collect field data, and perform site reviews and occasional construction inspection. Field work may expose the incumbent to various field conditions such as loud noise, dirt, uneven surfaces, airborne particles, cold or hot weather, irritating plants such as poison oak, irritating insects such as ticks, rain, heights, traffic, and moving vehicles or equipment.

In support of Emergency Projects the incumbent may be required to work in the field at night, overtime and odd hours may be required depending on the needs in the field. Support of emergency projects may also be an office role providing alignments, data, alternative study, earthwork estimates, etc. to field crews. Travel will include day trips but occasionally requiring overnight stays and in some rare instances for extended periods.

TELEWORK - This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s current telework policy. While Caltrans supports telework, in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksite with minimal notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate may be required to conduct business travel on behalf of the Department or commute to the headquartered location. Business travel reimbursements considers an employee’s designated Headquarters Location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions.  All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.


New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.
