Job Description and Duties

The Site Mitigation and Restoration Program in Berkeley is seeking a Supervising Hazardous Substances Engineer I to lead our Contra Costa/Solano counties unit. This individual will lead Project Managers of various engineering and scientific disciplines.

General Statement: Under the direction of the Environmental Program Manager I (Supervisory) (Branch Chief) in the Site Mitigation and Restoration Program (SMRP) Berkeley Branch, the Unit Chief supervises and directs the project managers of various engineering and scientific disciplines. The Unit Chief ensures that SMRP goals and objectives are met and that decisions are technically sound, innovative, consistent with DTSC goals and procedures, and protective of public health and the environment.


As a Supervising Hazardous Substances Engineer I you will have the opportunity to:

  • Provide technical direction and training to staff who oversee environmental investigations and cleanup activities at properties where hazardous materials, substances or waste were released into the environment
  • Develop and update work plans, schedules, commitments, monitor program activities in conjunction with the Branch Chief to ensure that program performance goals, performance measures, and schedules are met
  • Monitor completion of personnel, general reporting, and tracking documents
  • Represent DTSC before federal, state and local agencies, elected officials, communities, and stakeholders who have an interest in the remediation and reuse of contaminated properties


Desirable Qualifications We Look For:


  • A proven track record of successfully leading and mentoring staff
  • Experience in assessing and tracking staff performance measures
  • Knowledge and Application of Engineering Principles Related to Site Cleanup and RCRA Corrective Action
  • Knowledge or Experience in Site Investigation and Remediation Projects
  • Experience in public outreach
  • It is preferrable that the candidate maintains a California license as a Professional Engineer
