Job Description and Duties

The California Coastal Commission (Commission) is seeking a talented Legal Secretary, Senior Legal Typist, or Legal Assistant to join its Legal and Enforcement Divisions. The successful candidate filling this position will provide a full range of legal administrative work to support these divisions as well as the overall goal of the Commission to protect and enhance the coast of California. The position will be filled in San Francisco.  There may be occasional travel to other parts of the State.  

The Legal Secretary/Senior Legal Typist or Legal Assistant position requires regular contact with the Commission staff and the public and often involves drafting correspondence involving the knowledge and application of legal regulations, policies and procedures. The position involves facilitating Legal and Enforcement staff’s preparations for monthly Commission meetings, including booking travel, preparing filings and confidential memorandum, assisting in production related tasks associated with administrative hearings, preparing numeric reports on pending enforcement cases, coordinating briefings, and other related tasks. The Legal Secretary also oversees the contents and organization of the Commission’s legal library as well as filing official documents. Depending on the qualifications of the successful candidate, this position may also involve the preparation of administrative records for litigation and assisting in responses to Public Records Act requests.

Duties will be adjusted commensurate with the level at which the position is filled.

Please note that this position has temporarily been altered to primarily telework status during the pandemic with 1-2 in office days per week until further notice.

We are looking for a Legal Secretary, Senior Legal Typist, or Legal Assistant with strong organizational and computer skills, who exercises sound judgment, and enjoys working both independently and as part of a team. The successful candidate for this position is expected to have the ability to communicate effectively with Commission staff and the public and to take initiative in their work. Prior experience as a legal secretary or paralegal is strongly preferred.

Consistent with all Commission staff, this Legal Secretary position is one that participates in tasks, trainings, outreach and other activities that support implementation of the agency’s Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) plan, which aims to create an inclusive workplace that allows staff from diverse backgrounds to thrive and improves agency outreach and public engagement.
