As part of the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) and the Animal Health and Food Safety Services (AHFSS) Division, The Animal Health Branch (AHB) functions as California’s organized, professional veterinary medical unit to protect public health, animal agriculture, and the economy from catastrophic animal diseases and other related health and agricultural problems. AHB addresses livestock diseases and issues that require statewide coordinated resources; implements programs that protect public health and animal agriculture; and ensures the availability, affordability, and wholesomeness of food.
The Animal Health Branch is advertising to fill an Supervising Veterinarian (General) position in Sacramento, the Supervising Veterinarian will be responsible for duties including but not limited to:
Provide Programmatic Oversight and Leadership in Disease Mitigation and Surveillance Section
· Develop, apply, modify, and oversee statewide risk management strategies for animal diseases in California.
· Coordinate the collection, storage, sharing, analysis, and reporting of information for animal disease traceability, disease risk management, and livestock disease surveillance activities.
· Coordinate with the Branch Chief, Assistant Branch Chief, other Branch supervisory veterinarians, and analytical staff to ensure implementation of disease traceability, disease risk management, and disease surveillance activities throughout the state
· Act as liaison for livestock disease surveillance with the California Animal Health and Food Safety (CAHFS) Laboratory system personnel.
· Oversee programs within the section, such as but not limited to, the Animal Disease Traceability (ADT) program for livestock originating, entering, and leaving California; and the California Secure Food Supply (SFS) Program by:
o Providing strategic leadership for the management of annual program plans
o Serving as a Subject Matter Expert for the programs in the section
o Providing project management support such as collaborating with program leads in setting program priorities and providing guidance on the setting of timelines, assigning tasks to program team members, and monitoring the achievement of milestones.
Assist in the Management and Administration of AHB:
Supervise Section and Program staff by:
o Mentoring and coaching staff
o Providing policy guidance and assistance

The duties of this position are mostly conducted indoors, however, the incumbent may occasionally be required to work outside, under difficult conditions, and in non-standard office environments.
Travel (including nights, weekends, and holidays) for extended periods may be required for meetings and events as well as during an emergency response. Travel on short notice may be required upon activation for emergency response. During emergency response periods, duties may require working long shifts at hours other than the normal work hours.

Regular or recurring telework may occur as part of the incumbent’s ongoing regular schedule in accordance with CDFA's Telework Policy.
Indoor activities may include:
· Operating a computer with various software programs, including e-mail and word processing.
· Entering information in a computer database.
Outdoor activities may include:
· Frequent travel by State vehicle or other modes of transportation to various locations in the district or State.
· Taking samples from livestock at farms, ranches, salesyards or other livestock facilities.
The incumbent may encounter:
· Confrontational, unfriendly or irate individuals.
· Heavy machinery.
· Extremes in dusty conditions, temperature and wind.
This position occasionally involves close contact with:
· Animals of various sizes and temperament.
· Knives, needles, and other instruments.
