Job Description and Duties

Hybrid Telework
Teleworking employees may be required to report to their headquarters office location on designated telework days. Travel expenses are not reimbursed, however other authorized transit subsidies do exist for those who qualify.

Under general direction of Senior Insurance Examiner (Supervisor) or Supervising Insurance Examiner, the Senior Insurance Examiner (Specialist), analyzes and conducts risk-focused surveillance of the most complex licensed entities to ensure their solvency and reviews pplications requiring the Commissioner's approval to ascertain their financial stability and compliance with the California Insurance Code, California Code of Regulations, Department's rules and the standard operating procedures of Financial Analysis Division (FAD). Provides reports and maintains databases to support FAD's financial analysis, to meet the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) Accreditation requirements, and to support all aspects of FAD's operations.


Occasional travel may be required within and/or outside the state of California via private or 
public transportation (i.e., automobile, airplane, etc.). Travel may include overnight stay and overtime may be required.

    Desirable Qualifications

    In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
    1. Have extensive experience in conducting risk-focused surveillance and strong analytical skills to accurately evaluate the financial conditions of complex licensed entities and adopt effective courses of action.
    2. Have extensive experience in maintaining database, creating and preparing clear, complete and concise reports and analyze the financial data in these reports.
    3. Experience in the use of computer application programs such as Microsoft Office (Access, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook), TeamMate and other database management applications/systems.
    4. Ability to work on special assignments from management that require a high degree of self-direction and independent decision-making
    1. Possess general knowledge of the California Insurance Code, the Department's Bulletins, Title 10 of the California Code of Regulations and Statutory Accounting Practices and Procedures Manual.
    1. Ability to work under pressure and handle multiple tasks efficiently, accurately, and timely.


    1. Have good communication (written and verbal) and collaborative/teamwork skills.
    1. Designation as a Certified Financial Examiner (CFE), Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Charter Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), Associate in Reinsurance (Are), Associate in Reinsurance Administration (ARA), Follow Life Management Institute (FLMI) is preferred.
