Job Description and Duties

PARK MAINTENANCE CHIEF I –PERMANENT - FULL TIME/ BAY AREA DISTRICT / MT TAMALPAIS STATE PARK

The reporting location is Mount Tamalpais State Park Maintenance Shop located in Marin County. This position works under the general direction of Park Maintenance Chief III.

The Park Maintenance Chief I has the authority and responsibility to plan, supervise and direct the overall maintenance program within the State Parks located throughout Marin County. This position manages the daily housekeeping, facility maintenance, grounds maintenance, equipment management, and related functions. This position provides leadership, supervision, training, and employee development opportunities to the staff. The incumbent maintains cooperative professional relationships within the community in order to further the philosophy and purposes of the State Park System and to ensure clear and direct liaison is maintained with local, state, federal and outside entities with similar roles and responsibilities. The Park Maintenance Chief I works directly with District and Headquarters staff and is responsible for keeping District management informed of progress on projects, controversial or sensitive issues, and the overall status of the program.

The selected candidate is required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan fingerprinting prior to appointment.

Possession of a valid driver’s license of the appropriate class and a safe driving record as documented by the Department of Motor Vehicles within 60 days prior to appointment. (A safe driving record is one free from convictions in the past two years for repeated moving violations or a single serious violation, such as drunk driving or reckless driving.)


Training and Development Assignments may be considered.

This position is designated as NOT Telework Eligible.

This position is currently eligible for a Recruitment & Retention pay differential for the Greater Bay Area. This pay differential is five percent (5%) of the base pay for each qualifying pay period and is in addition to the monthly salary range.

This recruitment may be used to fill identical vacancies which may occur within 180 days of the Final Filing Date of this job posting.

Working Conditions

Typical work activities may involve frequent and prolonged periods of standing and walking. May have moderate exposure to dirt, dust, fumes, unpleasant odors and/or loud noises. May require heavy physical work including lifting, pushing or pulling. As an employee in required state housing, you are expected to respond to call-outs for non-emergencies, emergencies, or critical events occurring districtwide and outside of your normal work hours. Some examples include, but not limited to, response to park alarms (fire, sewer, water, etc.), hazardous material response (direct and support), fire response (direct and support), maintenance of critical infrastructure, and opening/closing gates after hours.
