Job Description and Duties

The Department of Water Resources’ Division of Engineering’s Environmental Coordination Section is a team of professionals dedicated to supporting the environmental planning and compliance aspects of DWR’s construction projects. Our team works with many Divisions within DWR on a variety of large public civil-works projects related to water storage, water transportation, flood control, environmental protection, species conservation, habitat restoration, and recreation.

Under the supervision of a Senior Environmental Scientist, the incumbent performs a range of duties involving environmental planning and compliance, including incorporating CEQA and permit measures into construction contract plans and specifications, as well as working closely with design and construction staff to address environmental issues. This position will require occasional site visits and travel to project sites throughout the State.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:


The successful incumbent will have a general knowledge of environmental planning and compliance concepts and implementation, such as State and federal environmental laws, regulations, and permits, as well as a familiarity with basic engineering and construction practices. Successful incumbents will also have experience with environmental compliance monitoring, logistics, such as organization of field efforts, collaboration with team members across disciplines, and the Construction General Permit. Candidates should possess competencies of teamwork, communication (listening, speaking, writing), problem solving, interpersonal skills, and resilience. General knowledge of or experience with the State Water Project and California’s Flood Management water infrastructure is desirable.
