Job Description and Duties

If you enjoy working on a team of experienced and dedicated colleagues, the California Department of Justice, Business Litigation Section is looking for you! At the California Department of Justice - Office of the Attorney General, you will be a part of a diverse group of over 5,000 professionals whose primary mission is to deliver fairness and equality under the law, through a broad spectrum of programs and services. The Business Litigation Section represents state agencies and officials in matters concerning the business of government and government regulation of business. We are recruiting motivated litigation professionals who want to work on interesting matters and in the public interest.

Under the direction of a Supervising Deputy Attorney General and the Senior Assistant Attorney General, the successful candidate for this position will perform a wide variety of paralegal duties in support of the section's litigation in state and federal trial and appellate courts. These include:
  • Performing a variety of discovery-related tasks including organizing documents produced during discovery and drafting/reviewing responses to propounded discovery.
  • Summarizing depositions, interview transcripts, and other documents.
  • Preparing subpoenas and California Public Records Act requests.
  • Performing research, including the review of case-related social media and legal research on Lexis and Westlaw.
  • Working regularly with a variety of document management programs, including Prolaw, Relativity, TextMap, and others.
  • Working cooperatively with client IT representatives to gather electronic records and with the Department’s electronic discovery unit to organize those records.
As a Senior Legal Analyst, you may be required to sit at a computer terminal while performing regular duties for approximately six to eight hours a day and you may be required to travel throughout the state to participate in trials and conduct witness interviews.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
  • Experience filing and serving documents electronically and by mail in state and federal courts.
  • Experience filing and serving documents in federal bankruptcy courts.
  • Experience assisting attorneys preparing for and during trial.
  • Experience assisting attorneys at remote depositions.
  • Experience reviewing discovery requests and assisting in production of documents.
  • Proficiency in Trial Director, Trial Pad, and courtroom presentation equipment such as projectors, iPads, and laptops.
  • Proficiency in Relativity or similar document management systems.
  • Experience in interviewing witnesses.
  • Experience in preparing trial exhibits and exhibit binders (both digital and paper).
  • Familiarity with local rules from California state and federal courts.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Teams, and Adobe PDFs.
