Job Description and Duties

California Department of Water Resources (DWR) is seeking an Environmental Scientists to join our talented team of professionals, who are passionate about water quality data collection, data management, analysis, quality control, and producing reports, publications, and presentations. We are looking for a candidate who enjoys working as a Team, with others in the field, laboratory, and office environments. You will be collecting, analyzing, and reporting on critical water quality data to support the state in regulatory compliance, restoration monitoring, and data synthesis projects. You would join a team of Environmental Scientists working on a variety of unique water quality monitoring projects in the Sacramento San Joaquin Delta and throughout the North Central Region Office (NCRO) service area.

Special Requirements

The incumbents must possess a valid California driver's license and be able to drive a state vehicle to field monitoring sites. This position requires early morning departures to water quality collection sites throughout the Delta and the NCRO region, sometimes during inclement weather, by boat or vehicular travel on public and private roadways, operating both standard and four-wheel drive vehicles. The incumbent must have the ability to traverse and work on uneven terrain carrying loads up to approximately 40 lbs. In addition, field work often occurs on or near swiftly moving water and the incumbent must possess skills to trailer and operate a boat safely (or the ability to learn), work from a boat, and to swim or stay afloat in the event of an emergency. Obtaining a California Safe Boater card will be required for this position.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

The positions require that the incumbents work cooperatively with others, maintain regular, consistent, and predictable attendance, exercise good judgment, have excellent attention to details, and actively participates in office meetings and activities. Experience in water science-based project planning, data management, water quality-related field work, data analyses, report writing, and presentation skills are required. Experience with database design and SQL relational database structures and application languages, such as VBA, Python, Java, and C# are preferred. Analysis and coding skills with R statistical software is desirable. Experience with both ArcGIS cartography and spatial analysis is also favored.
