Experience the remote beauty behind-the-scenes at Napa-Sonoma Marshes Wildlife Area! Located at the northern edge of the San Pablo Bay, this area spans over 15,000 acres of managed and tidal marsh, supporting various wildlife such as the endangered salt-marsh harvest mouse, California least tern, Ridgway's rail, California black rail, and serves as an important rest stop along the Pacific Flyway for several migratory shorebird and waterfowl species. Nearly 10,000 acres of this wildlife area has been restored from diked wetlands or salt ponds to fully tidal marsh, with each unit providing unique opportunities for recreation and research.
Exciting field work in the summer involves providing support for nesting shorebird surveys, small mammal trapping, and vegetation surveys, while support is also needed for data entry/organization and permit-required monitoring of restored salt ponds. Work in the fall and winter includes assisting with secretive marsh bird surveys, data entry/proofing, file organizing, and assisting staff as needed with special hunts, maintaining shared office space, invasive plant removal, other habitat projects, and reporting suspicious activity on the wildlife area.

Involves regularly working outside in inclement weather and harsh conditions. Areas include uneven terrain in various environments. Involves irregular hours and varying workweek schedules to accommodate field work, which may include working on weekends. Field days can be 10-12 hours long and start early in the morning. Requires tolerating mosquitos, ticks, and inclement weather (heat or rain) and walking distances over uneven and flooded terrain. Ability to work on various small watercrafts (motorized and self-propelled [kayak]). Ability to sit and use a computer keyboard several hours a day.
