Job Description and Duties

Are you looking for a position working with wetlands, waterfowl, and uplands while interacting with a diverse group of entities including other state agencies, county governments, Federal agencies, Native American Tribes, the public, and local land owners? The Department of Fish and Wildlife's Bay Delta Region (Region 3, or BDR) is seeking a motivated individual to work as a Fish and Wildlife Technician located in the BDR's office at the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area (YBWA) near Davis, CA.

Under the supervision of the YBWA Senior Environmental Scientist Supervisor, the Fish and Wildlife Technician will be responsible for conducting day to day management activities on the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area outside of Davis. These activities include operating equipment such as tractors, backhoes, and four wheel drive vehicles. Job duties include discing, mowing, road maintenance, installation and maintenance of water control structures, water management, and the control of invasive species. Employee will interact with the public on a regular basis and act as a lead with the hunter check station during waterfowl season. They will help maintain heavy equipment and vehicles, as well as buildings and small gas and hand powered tools.

This position may be eligible for a telework opportunity in accordance with departmental policies and operational needs. Employees are currently required to work in-person at least two (2) days per week. Beginning July 1, 2026, employees will be required to work in-person at least four (4) days per week in alignment with Executive Order N-22-25. Additional in-office days may be required based on operational needs.

This position is a 12-month Limited Term (LT) and may be extended up to 24 months or become permanent.

Working Conditions

Incumbent must possess a valid Class C Driver License. Must be able to operate a motor vehicle and equipment and be prepared to drive using a State vehicle. If the employee does not have a Qualified Applicator Certification for pesticide application, they must work under one who possesses such certification. Must be able to work in adverse weather including rain, cold, and heat; on unstable terrain; and on weekends (and holidays) and early morning and the evening hours when necessary during certain times of the year. Incumbent must be able to staff the hunter check station during the waterfowl hunting season on weekends, holidays, early morning and late evening shifts, and act as lead for seasonal staff during check station shifts.

The designated headquarters location of this position is the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area in Davis, California.

Special Requirements

Must possess a valid Class C Driver License. Able to elevate up to 50 pounds and work in inclement weather including rain, heat, and cold and on unstable terrain. Able to work unusual hours (and on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays).

Special Personal Characteristics: Excellent ability to act independently.

Interpersonal Skills: Able to communicate and work both independently and in a team setting.

Knowledge of moist soil management and management of and techniques for dealing with invasive species. Skill to operate a global positioning system (GPS) unit and perform basic geographic information system (GIS) tasks, and use Microsoft Office programs including Excel and Access to track and evaluate data. Able to operate all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicles in hazardous and muddy terrain. Possession of a Qualified Applicator Certification. Possession of a Class A or Class B Driver License.
