STATE PARK PEACE OFFICER SUPERVISOR (RANGER/LIFEGUARD) – ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICES DIVISION / TRAINING SECTION / BUTTE COLLEGE

The reporting location for this position is Butte College, 3536 Butte Campus Drive, Oroville, California. The position works under the general direction of the State Park Superintendent II (Academy Director) assigned to the Training Section.

 

The Cadet Training Officer plays a vital role in the professional development of California State Park Peace Officer Cadets. The incumbent assists in the coordination and delivery of the Ranger/Lifeguard Basic Visitor Services Training Program and supports the planning and delivery of Department training programs throughout California. This position offers an outstanding promotional opportunity to develop leadership skills, gain experience in a variety of training environments, and contribute to the implementation of innovative training concepts, equipment, and instructional methodologies. The successful candidate will also be mentored for future leadership opportunities within the Department.

 

Primary responsibilities include providing supervisory oversight of cadets; coordinating training equipment, supplies, records, instructors, testing, training venues, lodging, and meals; and ensuring the successful delivery of academy and Department training programs. The incumbent will work collaboratively with Academy staff, Department personnel, partner agencies, and external organizations to support high-quality training operations.

 

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic individual who demonstrates integrity, professionalism, sound judgment, strong leadership abilities, and a commitment to teamwork. The successful candidate must communicate effectively with tact and discretion, exercise initiative, and build positive working relationships with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders.

 

Occasional statewide travel may be required. The selected candidate will attend the POST-certified Recruit Training Officer Orientation Program. Prior experience as a Field Training Officer, Recruit Training Officer, or POST-certified Core Instructor is highly desirable.

Eligibility Information

To be appointed you must satisfy one of the following requirements:

1.  List Eligibility – Successfully complete the civil service exam for State Park Peace Officer Supervisor (Ranger). There is currently no open exam for the classification. Check back at a later date here.

2.  Transfer Eligibility – Must have current employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable. If in a different classification, you must meet the minimum qualifications (see Minimum Qualifications section and associated links above).

3.  Reinstatement Eligibility – Previously obtained permanent employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable. If in a different classification, you must meet the minimum qualifications (see Minimum Qualifications section and associated links above).

In some special circumstances, candidates who meet the Minimum Qualifications for the position, but who do not have one of the types of eligibility listed above, may be hired. However, this is rare, and the preferred method of appointment is through eligibility as described above.
