Job Description and Duties

The California Supreme Court Coordination Unit Supervising Deputy Attorney General (SDAG) has day-to-day responsibility helping to manage noncapital criminal matters in the California Supreme Court for which the Criminal Law Division takes lead responsibility. The incumbent works closely with, and under the supervision of, the Senior Assistant Attorney General for the California Supreme Court Coordination Unit to provide supervisory review of noncapital criminal matters in the California Supreme Court. The incumbent closely reviews California Supreme Court pleadings, participates in moot courts, and takes the lead on briefing and argument in significant California Supreme Court criminal cases. The incumbent also provides advice about California Supreme Court criminal litigation, further appellate action in Court of Appeal cases, significant developing appellate issues, and related matters of substantial importance to the Criminal Law Division and the Department.

Working Conditions


This is a hybrid position under the current DOJ telework policy, which is subject to modification. The position provides the opportunity to work remotely or in the office, or a combination of both, but some in-office attendance is required. Travel and additional in-person attendance may be required for court appearances, meetings, or other operational needs.

Department Information

  • These positions are located in the Division of Criminal Law, Executive Unit and may be filled in either Sacramento, San Francisco, Fresno, Los Angeles or San Diego.  Please clearly indicate your preferred city or cities in the “Examination or Job Title(s) For Which You Are Applying” section of your State Application.

  • The Deputy Attorney General classifications qualify for a “Hire Above Minimum" (HAM) salary (Hiring Above Minimum Policy).

    The starting salary for each classification will be:

    • Deputy Attorney General Supervisor (8 years): $14,655

    New to State candidates in the DAG series will be hired at the starting HAM salary of the classifications.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:


1. Knowledge of state and federal procedural rules relevant to noncapital litigation in the California Supreme Court.

2. Outstanding written and oral communication skills, including both expository and advocacy writing and presentations, and the ability to provide compelling advocacy on behalf of the Department and its clients.

3. Experience in handling state and federal noncapital litigation, including direct appeals, habeas corpus litigation, petitions for review, answers to petitions for review, merits briefing in the California Supreme Court, and answers to amicus curiae briefing in the California Supreme Court.

4. Experience reviewing noncapital case pleadings and serving on moot court panels to prepare attorneys for oral argument in the California Supreme Court.

5. Exceptional analytical and strategic judgment in assessing, and providing advice about, complex appellate litigation, including the ability to seek common ground or mutually acceptable positions on difficult issues.
