Job Description and Duties

This position is for a 10-month school year with eligbility for an additional 2 months to be paid by State Special School Benefits through unemployment insurance (SSSB Program).

The Teaching Assistant provides instructional and technical support to individuals and groups of students throughout all phases of Career and Technical Education (CTE) instruction. The position assists students in developing technical skills, including the safe and proper use of trade tools, power tools, equipment, and related materials. The Teaching Assistant supports students with assignments, projects, and hands-on activities, encourages quality work, and guides students in conducting quality reviews to meet state and industry CTE standards.


The position assists CTE teachers with preparing instructional materials, organizing classroom and laboratory activities, monitoring the safe use of equipment and supplies, and maintaining inventory. The Teaching Assistant also assists with Technical Advisory Committee meetings, special CTE events, and other department activities. The position monitors students during field trips and other off-campus activities, promotes a safe and productive learning environment, and performs other duties as assigned. The CTE Teaching Assistant reports to the CTE Supervisor.

Working Conditions

The CTE Teaching Assistant works in classrooms, laboratories, workshops, and other instructional environments with exposure to noise, dust, fumes, machinery, tools, equipment, and varying temperatures, and requires the ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, reach, use trade tools and equipment safely, maintain sufficient physical mobility, manual dexterity, visual and auditory ability, and lift and carry materials and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.

The California School for the Deaf, Fremont CSDF) is one of 6 State Special Schools under the Department of Education. Located on a 96-acre campus shared with the California School for the Blind, and the Diagnostic Center, North, we are a short walk from BART and have free employee parking.

  • The position(s) require(s) fluency in the American Sign Language language. If the State of California does not have a current record documenting your fluency in this language, you will be required to successfully pass an approved language fluency test prior to being hired.
