Job Description and Duties

Would you like to be part of a growing and exciting fisheries program? Do you have a passion for fish and wildlife, working outdoors, and being in nature? The Inland Deserts Region Fisheries program is seeking to hire a Scientific Aid to assist with field-based fisheries and amphibian work in the Inland Empire and surrounding areas. This is an exceptional opportunity to gain hands-on, career-building experience in fish sampling methods, data collection, and applied fisheries management and restoration. These positions require fieldwork in river, stream, and lake environments throughout San Bernardino, Riverside, and Imperial counties.

The Fish and Wildlife Scientific Aid classification is a non-testing classification.

• Applicants who receive public assistance under the CalWORKs program shall be given hiring priority consideration as provided in Government Code, Section 19063.

Working Conditions

Outdoor field work-based position, irregular hours, long days, including nights, weekends, holidays and travel up to 5% to perform field work, including working outdoors in inclement weather and on uneven ground or on a boat. May have to work in variable temperature gradients, ranging from 10 degrees Fahrenheit during winter months to 120 degrees Fahrenheit during summer months. Hike in mountainous terrain, creeks rivers and camp in remote areas and work at night. Work may require extended hours in the field including strenuous physical activities (hiking using GPS navigation, pulling nets, carrying equipment), and overnight camping. Fieldwork will include driving a 4-wheel drive vehicle.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
  • Knowledge of applied fisheries management and field techniques to assess populations and habitat. 
  • Ability to follow established sampling protocol and accurately collect and record field data. 
  • Identify CA freshwater fish species and/or utilize fish keys; knowledge of and ability to identify local invertebrate communities, and conduct field-based surveys in a safe manner. 
  • Experience backpack camping or the willingness to learn; willingness to hike and backpack for extended periods in remote locations; willingness to swim and wade in streams and rivers, often in swift water.  
  • Experience in ichthyology, fisheries, or zoology.
