Looking to join a dynamic and diverse team working to address and prevent human-wildlife conflict in California? The Department of Fish and Wildlife is seeking a motivated individual to work as a Human-Wildlife Conflict Intern.
Under direct supervision of the Supervisor in the Region, incumbent will provide dedicated program support to the Human-Wildlife Conflicts Program (HWC) and core functions. Responsibilities will include the following duties.
Manage and track HWC calls, reports, and incident response in coordination with Conflict Specialists; regional staff; and the Wildlife Health Laboratory (WHL). Utilize the Wildlife Incident Reporting (WIR) System as an authorized user. Migrate and/or integrate HWC data from various datasets into the WIR System (e.g., incident reports, depredation permits, monthly take data); assist with data collection, organization, and maintenance to ensure data integrity and quality control of complex dataset(s). Perform program-specific data entry, basic scientific calculations, assembling necessary charts, tables, and graphs. Provide technical information to reporting parties to mitigate human-wildlife conflict based on current best practices emphasizing effective and humane solutions.
Assist regional staff conducting site visits and/or incident response to investigate reported conflict, incidents associated with wildfire, drought, or disease, and depredation (e.g., livestock loss, property damage) possibly resulting in the issuance of lethal or nonlethal permits to take offending animals. Assist transporting wildlife, including conflict animals, sick, orphaned, and injured wildlife in coordination with regional staff, and Law Enforcement Division as necessary. Assist staff with setting and monitoring wildlife traps, data collection, and field processing of wildlife. Assist with routine maintenance, cleaning, inventory, supply orders, restocking, organization of equipment and vehicles.
Prepare and distribute outreach materials (e.g., brochures) at special events, public meetings, and upon request. Assist staff conducting public, stakeholder, and professional meetings. Respond to public inquiries, calls and emails pertaining to human-wildlife conflict and related issues.

Must be willing to work long, irregular hours, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends. Field activities may involve strenuous physical activity in variable weather conditions, and occasionally require the use of an all-terrain vehicle (ATV). Office work can require using computer keyboard at least several hours a day, sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods. Lifting heavy and irregular items (up to 40 pounds) and performing strenuous field and lab work are required. Must attend occasional meetings. In addition to working with Regional and Field Office staff, interact with other CDFW staff (e.g., in other Regions and at Headquarters) and members of the public, mostly via Teams, e-mail and telephone. Must possess a valid driver’s license and be prepared to operate a State vehicle with and without four-wheel drive (4WD), maneuvering trailers in mud and snow on state highways and local roads. Wearing a uniform in interaction with the public is required to identify the incumbent as an employee of the Department. Must be vaccinated against rabies virus with adequate current antibody titer or be willing to receive pre-exposure rabies vaccinations as pre-condition of working with rabies vector species.
