Job Description and Duties

Working at the Salmon Conservation and Research Facility (SCARF) and the adjacent Interim Facility (Fish Quarantine), and as directed, sorts male and female salmonids for spawning, take ripe eggs from females and fertilize eggs with milt from males, treat eggs, measure/inventory eggs, measure/inventory fish, clean troughs, tanks, filters and screens, remove and dispose of dead fish, take weight counts, treat diseased fish with approved chemicals. Conducts water quality sampling/recording; maintains neat and accurate records. Safe operation of light equipment and State vehicles in various road and weather conditions and in isolated areas, loads and carries buckets of fish from truck to water over uneven, steep terrain; operates fish pump, fish crowder, aeration and oxygen equipment on fish transport trucks; performs basic maintenance on all fish transport equipment; safe operation of fish pump, crowder, forklift and feed cart/truck. Performs a variety of maintenance, landscaping, plant trimming, weeding, mowing. Enrolls in applicable training when possible such as: Fish culture related courses, written and verbal communication.

The Fish and Wildlife Scientific Aid classification is a non-testing classification.

• Applicants who receive public assistance under the CalWORKs program shall be given hiring priority consideration as provided in Government Code, Section 19063.

• Applicants may obtain verification from the CalWORKs program. If CalWORKs verification is not submitted with the application, it will not be processed as CalWORKs eligible.

• Participation by a public assistance recipient is voluntary and in no event shall any person be subject to sanctions, through loss of benefits or eligibility, for not applying for, accepting, or continuing in a seasonal or entry level non-testing classification opening.


Personal Leave Program: Effective July 1, 2025, state employees are subject to temporary salary reductions ranging from 2% to 4.62% in exchange for Personal Leave Program (PLP) hours. Please note that the salary ranges listed in this Job Control may not reflect these reductions associated with the 2025 Personal Leave Program.

Working Conditions

The Salmon Conservation and Research Facility (SCARF) and Interim Facility are located in the central San Joaquin valley, where a Mediterranean climate is characterized by below freezing winter temperatures and extreme heat during the summer. Most work at the facility occurs outside and must be completed regardless of difficult working conditions. The SCARF has centralized air for staff cooling. The Interim Facility lacks central air, but does have a large, mobile evaporative cooler for outside work in extreme heat. Climbing in and out of large diameter round tanks for cleaning is necessary, as is stepping up over potential tripping hazards and climbing ladders.

Special Requirements

Must be able to lift 40 lbs sacks of salt, fish food, sand, etc.; climbing ladders in and out of circular fish tanks, avoiding tripping hazards (above ground water supply piping, electrical cords, open drains, etc.); working in thigh-high flowing water netting up to 30-lb fish; working in harsh outdoor conditions of extreme heat, cold, rain, etc.

This position requires possession of a valid Driver's License. The selected candidate will be required to provide a photocopy (front and back) of the license: Name as stated on the license, issuing state, DL #, Class, expiration. 


The selected candidate may be required to provide transcripts (may be unofficial).
