Job Description and Duties

The Department of Developmental Services (DDS) is recruiting to fill MULTIPLE Peace Officer I positions within the Office of Protective Services (OPS) at Porterville Developmental Center (PDC).


Under the direct supervision of the Peace Officer II (POII) or Sergeant, Office of Protective Services (OPS), the Peace Officer I (POI) is responsible for performing daily law enforcement, patrol and custody activities at a developmental center (DC).

The POI is responsible for the daily tasks associated with facility operation, including enforcement, patrol functions, crime prevention, first responder to incidents, emergencies, custody duties, conducting preliminary investigations, and assisting with the control and transport of clients under security when required.  The POI is responsible for preparing written preliminary investigative reports, daily logs, and any other written documentation required by the POII. The POI may perform other duties as required by his/her supervisor.

A full background investigation will be completed prior to a conditional offer of employment being made.  All appointments subject to pre-employment physical and fingerprint clearance.

Effective July 1, 2020 State employees are subject to a salary reduction in exchange for 16 hours per month of the Personal Leave Program 2020. Please see the Personal Leave Program information for additional details.

Special Requirements

The Office of Protective Services (OPS) is a Law Enforcement Agency. After the background check clears, the applicant will be appointed to the position. This background check includes interviews of employment and personal references; and FBI, California DOJ finger print clearances and DMV clearance(s). The selected applicant must complete a notarized waiver for access to their personal records.


Completion of the Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) Basic Academy is required (Please attach certificate to application). And current California driver’s license is required. This is a sworn Peace Officer position pursuant to California Penal Code section 830.3(v). Successful candidate will undergo a complete background investigation, in accordance with the Commission on POST requirements.
