Working Conditions

Ability to walk long distances, willingness to travel throughout the State and work odd and irregular hours; keenness of observation; and neat personal appearance.  Weekend, evening work, and overtime may be required.  This position may require overnight travel.  The incumbent is required to travel throughout an assigned geographical area by various methods of transportation.  The ability to handle communications from the public (including licensees) is essential. Valid California Driver License required.

Candidate selected will be required to have a medical clearance completed by a licensed physician.

Department Information

The mission of the Board is to ensure the health and safety of California consumers by promoting ethical standards and by enforcing the laws of the barbering and beauty industry.

The Board is responsible for licensing cosmetologists, barbers, manicurists, estheticians and electrologists, as well as the establishments where the services are performed. The Board has a licensee population of over 500,000 and employs 82.1 PY’s. Staff is responsible for the licensing, examinations, inspections and enforcement of the beauty industry. In addition, the Board is responsible for ensuring that there is a fair disciplinary appeal process in place. The Board maintains a 19 million dollar budget and operates out of three facilities. The facilities include the Sacramento headquarters office, and examination facilities in Fairfield (North) and Glendale (South).

Special Requirements

  • The position(s) require(s) a valid California Drivers License (CDL). You must answer the questions addressing your CDL on your application. Ensure you provide your CDL number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements and/or restrictions.

The Inspector classification requires a medical examination to determine if you can perform the essential functions of the job safely and effectively and a valid drivers license.

The incumbent’s residence will be their designated office headquarters.

The inspector will conduct inspections in the following counties:
