Job Description and Duties

The Information Technology Specialist I acts as a Microsoft SQL Database Administrator and serves as a technical lead to provide guidance on database and application development efforts.

The tasks for the SQL Server DBA include, but are not limited to, the following:

• On-going maintenance of Microsoft SQL Server databases. Daily operational tasks like:
    o Monitoring backups
    o Assisting with database recovery
    o Monitoring MS SQL Server database availability
    o Monitoring MS SQL Server error logs
    o Monitoring database mirroring
    o Performance monitoring and tuning as needed
• Production support of Microsoft SQL Server database issues, this may include work outside of normal business hours.
• Maintain and monitor High-Availability of SQL Server Database Mirrors between production and disaster recovery (DR) environments.
• Develop and implement proactive monitoring for a multi-server Microsoft SQL Server environment (email reports like a SQL Server Job Failure report ran as a SQL Job).
• Provide advice/recommendations on SQL Server architecture, design and implementation.
• Provide training, documentation for knowledge transfer to other CPUC ITSD team members, and communicate both to non-technical users and to technical personnel in the CPUC ITSD support team.
• Provide technical coverage for all CPUC deployed Microsoft SQL Servers.

Please write your SOQ to address the following:

  1. Knowledge and experience with designing, installing, upgrading, configuring, and administering Microsoft SQL Server in both on premise and cloud environments.
  2. Knowledge and experience with data modeling, data normalization/denormalization, import/export/ETL, and data validation/quality assurance.
  3. Knowledge and experience with writing, troubleshooting, and optimizing MS SQL Server queries.
  4. Knowledge and experience with capacity planning, supporting high availability configurations, backups and recovery, and disaster recovery of MS SQL Server environments.

  • Minimum qualifications for the Information Technology Specialist I.
Desirable Experience/Qualifications

  • Microsoft SQL Server DBA hands on skills in supporting a production database in all operations, such as troubleshooting daily operational issues.

  • Experience installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and optimizing MS SQL Server technologies.

  • Experience with Microsoft SQL Server database capacity planning, performance tuning, high availability, backups/restores, and disaster recovery in complex environments and mission critical applications.

  • Data modeling (logical and physical), database normalization, and database denormalization experience.

  • Experience creating data load packages using MS SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS)/Data Quality Software (DQS), or comparable ETL and data quality software.

  • Tracking, monitoring, and reporting database jobs and processes using various software products.

  • Experience with Active Directory, LDAP, and Role/Responsibility Based User Control.

  • Experience deploying, supporting, and administering Microsoft SQL Server in cloud environments.

  • Communicate and prepare oral and written reports to IT management and end users.

  • Two years project/program lead experience.
