Job Description and Duties

The Department of Financial Protection and Innovation (DFPI) (formerly Department of Business Oversight) is recruiting for one permanent/full-time Investigator positions in the Enforcement Division. The position will be located in either Sacramento or Los Angeles. This recruitment may be used to fill subsequent vacancies of these positions in DFPI within the next 180 days.

Effective July 1, 2020, in response to the economic crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Department of Human Resources implemented the Personal Leave Program 2020 (PLP 2020). State employees are subject to a 9.23% salary reduction in exchange for 16 hours per month of PLP 2020 leave credits. The salary information listed under “Position Details” does not reflect the reduction in pay.

Under the general direction of the Deputy Commissioner, or Supervising Special Investigator I, the Investigator independently plans, coordinates and conducts the most complex and sensitive criminal, civil and administrative investigations into violations of the laws, rules, or regulations under the Department’s jurisdiction; gathers and analyzes facts and evidence; prepares clear, concise, and accurate documents and reports detailing case investigation activities and findings in order for departmental counsel to take appropriate action.

Working Conditions

Los Angeles Location: The Los Angeles office is located in the heart of the downtown financial district within walking distance to restaurants, transit, multiple parking options.

Sacramento Location: The Sacramento office is located in north Natomas and offers FREE PARKING, is easily accessible from INTERSTATES 5 and 80, and is also close to various dining and shopping choices in the Natomas area.

The incumbent must be willing to exercise flexibility and agility as well as be willing to telework (remote work) from home as needed. Telework is subject to DFPI’s Telework Program Policy.

The Department of Financial Protection and Innovation (DFPI) (formerly Department of Business Oversight) protects consumers and oversees financial service providers and products. The DFPI supervises the operations of state-licensed financial institutions, including banks, credit unions and money transmitters. Additionally, the DFPI licenses and regulates a variety of financial service providers, including securities brokers and dealers, investment advisers, payday lenders and other consumer finance lenders.
