Job Description and Duties

The Safer Alternatives Assessment and Biomonitoring Section (SAABS) of the Reproductive and Cancer Hazard Assessment Branch in the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) carries out the following major public health and environmental activities: conducts the legislatively mandated California Environmental Contaminant Biomonitoring Program (CECBP; also known as Biomonitoring California); identifies and assesses emerging environmental contaminants concerns using innovative methods; provides high-level biostatistical support, including conducting complex dose-response assessments under Proposition 65 and assessing exposures and risks associated with fuel-related air pollutants; and providing expert technical assistance to other OEHHA programs and other California agencies, such as the California Air Resources Board (CARB) (support for implementation of the Community Air Protection Program under AB 617; C. Garcia, Chapter 136, Statutes of 2017).

Under general supervision of the Environmental Program Manager I, Chief, SAABS, the Research Scientist II (Epidemiology/Biostatistics) will plan, organize, and carry out epidemiological research of moderate complexity for biomonitoring studies and act as a technical consultant on specific aspects of the studies. The biomonitoring studies are to support the evaluation of chemical exposures of potential health concern in communities identified under AB 617. The Research Scientist II (Epidemiology/Biostatistics) will develop epidemiological study tools for the studies, statistically analyze biomonitoring results, engage with study partners, prepare reports describing biomonitoring findings, and give presentations.

This position may be located either at 1515 Clay Street, 16th Floor, Oakland, or at 1001 I Street, 12th Floor, Sacramento, California.

Working Conditions

• Office work conducted in cubicle on the 12th/16th floor of a high-rise building and off-site work, including telework
• Travel across California for biomonitoring study activities
• Extensive computer use, which involves prolonged sitting, viewing of a monitor, and repetitive motion
• Time-critical assignments
• May be required to travel to other locations for business-related needs as necessary

STATEMENT OF QUALIFICATIONS

The Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) serves as documentation of your ability to present information clearly and concisely in writing. The SOQ is a narrative discussion, not a bulleted summary. Please answer each of the following questions for the SOQ. Identify each response with the number of the SOQ question, single-spaced, and using Arial 12 point font. The SOQ should be no more than three (3) pages in length.

1. Describe your experience developing epidemiological study tools. Include specific examples.
2. Describe your experience conducting statistical and epidemiological analyses, including the software you used.
3. Describe at least one example of working with a multidisciplinary team. Include the types of expertise of the team members and the project(s) the team worked on.
4. Provide three examples of presentations you have given, including the topic covered and the audience.
